Calculation of average heart rate based on the distribution of heart rate zones

August 27, 2012 - Posted by

Many athletes use average heart rate as an important training metric, but there are times when your heart rate monitor is not functioning well or you just forgot to take it with you. We know how frustrating these situations are and we continuously develop better algorithms for automated replacement of your missing heart rate data.

Sportlyzer’s formula of average heart rate is based on the time spent in heart rate zones. Therefore, we see it as the next step for the automated calculation of distribution of heart rate zones. Why is this important at all? Because this way you can replace your missing heart rate monitor data by just answering a question „How hard was your workout?“ by dragging a slider control on a scale of 1 to 10.

Remember that all the heart rate data replacement calculations are approximate and we are still actively developing these. Whenever you are using the automated calculation of heart rates, we advise you to check the outcomes and correct the numbers manually if needed.
